Ketogenic diet is a low-carb diet that relies primarily on fats and proteins for calories. Individuals on keto diet cut down on sugar, bread and pasta.
Indidviduals who are on ketogenic diet limit their carbohydrate amount to less than 50g per day.
When our bodies do not have carbohydrates for energy, fats (either stored fat or dietary fat) are used to supply our bodies and brain with energy instead. Our body now enters a state known as ketosis and ketones are produced.
The 3 main types of ketones are as below:
- Acetoacetate - the main ketone produced. It is either used for energy, or excreted through urine.
- Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) - used as fuel by the body and brain.
- Acetone - produced in small quantities and majority is excreted through breath.
Ketogenic diet has become increasingly popular over the years because of the benefits.
Many believed that ketones can result in more fat burning, enhance endurance training and support brain health.
